Head Veterinary Nurse

Hi, my name is Karen and I attended Berkshire College of Agriculture and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 1988. I started out volunteering at my local veterinary practice doing Saturday work initially for 2 years. Once I left school I was offered a trainee position. I have worked in practice for the last 39 years. I love anything to do with animals and medical so this was an obvious choice. I have worked at St Runwalds for the last 18 years, now owned by Medivet. We see a variety of small animals, and every day is different. I think that's why I enjoy it so much. I have been Head Nurse for nearly 3 years. I help look after the team, your pets and the smooth running of the practice. I have a sixteen year old cat called Miffy and two wonderful, but cheeky Border Terriers called Fern and Finn.

I have worked in Veterinary for the last 11 months, loving all the animals I meet. Prior to this I worked for 10 years in retail, and previously training and riding horses in all disciplines. I have a 12-year-old cat called Willow who I have had from a kitten, she shares her home with 4 tropical fish.

Thank you for your urgent help after my dog unexpectedly ingested fake turf. You were most helpful and reassuring. Much appreciated.

The only thing I care about is the quality of care my pets get. Medivet has a reputation for being expensive - it is, but so are many other veterinary surgeries. I’ve been very satisfied with the standard of the vets I’ve encountered since St Runwalds was taken over by Medivet. I did and do still prefer the continuity we had when Anita James was the practice owner - she is an amazing and caring vet. I’ve had some complex issues with my rescue dogs and continuity with Anita was invaluable.for their well being. However, I will continue to remain with the practice given the standard of veterinary care I’ve experienced with Medivet.

I cannot praise the surgery highly enough for the recent care, communication and support offered during the diagnosis and treatment of Phoebes kidney problems.

How sad that St Runwalds has turned into Medivet. Used to be a buzzy, professional vet practice. Now sold out to Medivet. The vet I saw treated my dog without proper consultation as to options. Then presented me with a £200 bill which should have been discussed before treatment.

After making the appointment over the phone , I was called back as it needed to be changed as there wasn't a vet to do it ? I was disappointed as I have to arrange lifts. New appointment , at that one of my cats was sick lovely lady from the surgery cleaned her up for us ⭐️
Vet seamed professional in checking the cats over & given them annual jabs & one cat having her nails clipped as I held her.
Sadly the vet didn't come across very friendly or happy in treating us, very few words spoken , no smiling & no small talk / talking though what she
was doing etc. My very old cat has a bad tooth ,
vet said it needs to come out,& it will cost £750 she know the price with out looking it up! I aired my concerns about his age & putting him though an op she just repeated the £750 offer & it come with blood tests. And that was the same with the 2 other cats. She did ask about flea & worm treatment I said I had booked them when I made the appointment and picking them up . She didn't mention the surgery did have the worming drops only have tablet form which we need the vet to give !! Only found that out later that day as only 1 pack of flea treatment pack for one cat had been signed off. We came back later to pick them up only to find you don't have the worm drops until December!? I Pay in to the monthly plan for all 3 cats everymonth no worming drops !!!vet could of said & could of put it on the computer so I didn't have to wait for her to sign it off so we could pick up the flea treatment. What has happened to the lovely vets at this surgery?? Came out feeling very disappointed with the vet.

I was told my dog might need surgery and an xray was required, I said I wanted a 2nd opinion and now they are trying to cancel my medivet contract, when I complained they said I had to wait 12 days for the manager to return. Not very professional or caring
